Get it moving now!

Happy winter solstice to you!  Today is the shortest day of the year in the northern hemisphere.  And those short days make it easy to be lazy.  But I urge to to fight back against that tendency with all you've got.

Today the sun made a cameo appearance here for the first day it seems all week.  And I took advantage of it and did an outdoor workout.  I got it moving.  I ran forwards downhill and backwards uphill for as many times as I could.  And it was a great workout.  More importantly, it was a great calorie burner.

This time of year we tend to eat more calories as a natural response to the short days.  But I have good news.  The days do not get any shorter now.  About the first of January, they will start to get longer.  By about the first of February, you will notice that they are longer.  And the spring equinox is only 90 days away.  So just keep that in mind.

My point is that you can't wait until New Year's Day to start losing or keeping weight off.  Now is the time to do it.  Even if you do not have time to exercise, there are other things you can do.

Let's say you have shopping to do.  The first thing you do is laugh at all those people who bunch up as close to the door of the mall as they can.  Instead, park as far from the door as you safely can.   And get some more exercise by walking an extra 50 or 100 yards to and from the door.  Next, once you are in the mall, walk around it as much as you can.  Use the stairs and climb up and down them more than you have to.  Make a workout out of it.

My next point is to avoid sugar as much as you can.  Stay away from those cookies.  Stay away from overly sweet and fat egg nog.  And do not drink too much.  As for drinking, stay away from any drinks such as soft drinks or energy drinks.  Read the ingredients on a can of energy drink.  The first ingredient is sugar!  If you need an energy boost, drink tea or coffee.  Without sugar.  

There is one exception to the above paragraph.  One day a week, reward yourself with a treat.  On Sunday, I have some ice cream.  Not a huge bowl, but a cup full of it.  That seems to do the trick.  Also, on Sunday, I cheat a little on meals.  If you have a cheat day every week, you can tell yourself it is only so many days until you can have that treat.

Many people in the more fortunate parts of the world put on a few pounds this time of the year.  And it is very hard to lost those few pounds.  Over the years, they add up.  So my best advice is not to put them on in the first place.

Sandbags are a great way to do strength and power training indoors.  They take up little space and store easily.  But do not fall into the rut of doing only strength and power training indoors.  Whenever the weather allows you to, like it did for me today, get some aerobic exercise outdoors.  It will help keep those holiday pounds off.  See more training tips here.
